Large Deep Food-Safe Wooden Bowl – Crafted from Storm-Salvaged Ash
Before diving into the details, I want to be upfront about this bowl’s natural imperfections and unique character marks. I encourage potential buyers to make an informed decision with this full context in mind. If, like me, you believe in giving materials a second chance and celebrating their natural quirks, this bowl could be a perfect fit for you. To help you assess its beauty and charm, I’ve included a few daylight photos for your reference.
While this bowl could have fetched a higher price without these imperfections, its stunning color and grain patterns still shine through, making it an eye-catching centerpiece. I believe it’s ideally suited as a display or fruit bowl, rather than for serving salad. I have reduced the price accordingly.
This stunning bowl originates from a storm-downed ash tree from Beaufort, Co. Kerry, which lay in an elevated ditch for over a year before being salvaged. While much of the lower trunk unfortunately succumbed to decay, the upper section produced unique and vibrant colors that only time and nature can create, making this bowl a one-of-a-kind masterpiece.
This bowl tells a story of nature’s quirks and a craftsman’s skill. While I saved most of the upper part of the tree, a few spots of soft grain remain throughout, adding character and authenticity.
The endgrain areas both inside and outside the bowl have marks & small pits or micro tear-outs from these soft areas. It’s something you’ll notice by close inspection more than from a distance—a gentle reminder of the wood’s natural origins. Far from being a flaw, this feature celebrates the harmony between nature's imperfections and the artistry of crafting something truly unique.
The bowl features an inward-curved and undercut rim that enhances its elegance, complemented by frizzy and quilted grain patterns that flow throughout the piece. Ash is my favorite wood to work with, and this particular tree was quite a lot of work to cut in place and then bring home.
Sized to make a statement, this bowl is perfect for a large table or display area. Weighing just over 1.8kg, it’s crafted to be both durable and timeless—a generational heirloom. Whether as a thoughtful gift or a cherished centerpiece, this bowl is a testament to real craftsmanship and nature’s beauty.
Finished with two coats of Danish Oil & 2 coats of Osmo oil for a smooth, food-safe surface, it’s ready for everyday use or long-term display. While the durable finish can handle food, please note that washing may soften the shine. Aftercare instructions will be included with your purchase, ensuring this bowl remains a treasured piece for years to come.
